Spaghetti Dinner....
in support of Michael Oliver


When? March 8, 2015, 5-7 pm
Where? 33 Stafford Indian Lane, Fred 22405 (in the school cafeteria)

Why? Michael recently has been diagnosed with brain cancer. All proceeds of this dinner will go directly to the Oliver family to help pay for medical expenses.
How? Purchase your tickets in the front office at Drew.

Tickets are being sold for $10 each. You will receive a spaghetti dinner complete with salad, bread, drinks and dessert.
 
 

Dear Parents,

Edward E. Drew, Jr. Middle School will be running a 2015 Reading-Raiser from Feb 23, 2015 to Mar 6, 2015.

A Reading-Raiser is like a jog-a-thon, except your child will be reading books instead of running laps, and earning pledges based on how much they read. Everything is tracked online, which makes inviting sponsors and logging reading much easier!

Your child will receive a private online account at http://www.learn2earn.org/ where he/she will log reading. Parent and student instructions on how to use the website have been sent home. Your child will not be able to invite any sponsors without your authorization.

Unlike other fundraisers where we keep only 40-60% of each donation, our school keeps 85% of each donation using this program. We are really excited to promote reading and help our school raise the necessary money for our ongoing needs.

Attention 8th grade parents! Recently, the counselors spoke with your student and explained the process for high school scheduling.  Your student has been provided a registration form, guidelines to scheduling sheet, and a course catalog.  The counselors will meet individually with every 8th grade student to review their registration form and develop a four year plan.  If you would like to attend the meeting with your student and the counselor, please click on the link below to reserve a time.  Each conference will be 15 minutes in length.  When reserving a conference time please enter your student’s first initial and last name.   If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Counseling Center at 540-371-1415.

Save the Dates! Our English department has some upcoming events scheduled and we will be sending more detailed information home with students in February.

February 23 - March 6 - Drew English Reading-Raiser! We will be working on our first Read-A-Thon. We are raising funds to help our English teachers bring in more books and technology for writing to their classrooms. Our goal is for every Drew student to get at least one reading sponsor!

March 7 - Barnes&Noble Book Fair - 12:00 - 5:00 - come support Drew and join us at the B&N Book Fair at Central Park.

February 25 - Our first ever African American Read-In. We will be having guest speakers and other events throughout the day to celebrate Black History month by focusing on the literary works of African American authors, poets and playwrights!

More details to follow on all of these events! Please let Mrs. Rollins (7th Grade English) know if you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help with any of these events!
 
All teachers and interested parents are encouraged to rview the textbooks under consideration for adoption and to complete an evaluation rubric. Locations to review these materials are listed below. Rubrics will be available at each public review location. Completed rubrics will be forwarded on to the appropriate textbook committee.

Communicable Diseases Update: Measles

The current outbreak of measles in the United States has been highly covered in the media and is of interest to our community.  To date, there have been no reported cases of measles in Virginia.  The Rappahannock Area Health District provides guidance to the school system during any public health situation.  Please click here for more information.
Advanced Placement Programs of Excellence (APPX)

The Advanced Placement Programs of Excellence (APPX) is aligned with the nationally and internationally recognized Advanced Placement Program, which is a part of the College Board’s partnership with high schools, colleges and universities. This Signature Program is designed to provide students with instruction in a variety of college level courses, taught by College Board trained instructors, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to achieve at an advanced level. Did you know……

Drew Middle School's first year of operation was in 1975. Prior to the school being a middle school, it was the original Stafford High School. Drew was named after Mr. Edward E. Drew, Jr. – have you ever wanted to know more about him?
